In a village in Iran there once lived a shepherd.

He was very poor.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-2.mp3
He did not have even a small cottage of his own.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-3.mp3
He had never been to school or learnt to read and write, forthere were very few schools in those days.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-4.mp3
Though poor and uneducated, this shepherd was verywise.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-5.mp3
He understood people’s sorrows and troubles And helped them face their problems with courage and common sense.

Many people came to him for advice.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-7.mp3
Soon he became famous for his wisdom and friendly nature.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-8.mp3
The king of that country heard about him, and thought of meeting him.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-9.mp3
Disguised as a shepherd and riding on a mule, oneday the king came to the cave where the wise shepherd lived.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-10.mp3
As soon as the shepherd saw the traveller coming towards the cave,
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-11.mp3
He rose to welcome him.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-12.mp3
He took the tired traveller inside the cave, gave him water to drink and a share of his own meagre meal.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-13.mp3
The king rested for the night in the cave and was greatly impressed by the shepherd’s hospitality and wise conversation.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-14.mp3
Though still tired, the king decided to depart the next morning.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-15.mp3
He said, “Many thanks for your kindness to a poor traveller.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-16.mp3
I have a long way to go. Permit me to leave.”
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-17.mp3
Looking straight into the eyes of his guest, the shepherd replied, “Thank you, Your Majesty, for paying me the compliment of a visit.”
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-18.mp3
The king was astonished as well as pleased.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-19.mp3
‘He is indeed very wise.’ he thought to himself.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-20.mp3
‘I need people like him to work for me.’
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-21.mp3
And the king appointed this humble shepherd the governor of a small district.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-22.mp3
Although he rose to power and dignity, the shepherd remained as humble as ever.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-23.mp3
People loved and honoured him for his wisdom, sympathy and goodness.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-24.mp3
He was kind and just to one and all.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-25.mp3
His fame as a fair and wise governor soon spread throughout the country.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-26.mp3
Now the governors of other provinces grew terribly jealousof him and began to talk to the king against him.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-27.mp3
They said, “He is very dishonest, and keeps for himself part of the money that he collects as tax from the people.”
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-28.mp3
Why did he always carry with him, they added, an iron chest?
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-29.mp3
Perhaps he carried in it the treasure that he had secretly collected.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-30.mp3
After all, they said mockingly, he was an ordinary shepherd and could behave no better.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-31.mp3
At first the king did not pay attention to these reports,
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-32.mp3
but how long could he ignore these governors and their endless stories about the shepherd?
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-33.mp3
One thing was certain, the king discovered. The new governor did carry an ironchest with him all the time.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-34.mp3
So, one day, the new governor was summoned to the palace.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-35.mp3
He came riding on his camel, and to everyone’s delight, the famous ironchest was there fastened securely behind him on the camel’s back.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-36.mp3
Now the king was angry.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-37.mp3
He thundered, “Why do you always carry that iron chest with you? What does it contain?”
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-38.mp3
The governor smiled. He asked his servant tobring in the chest.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-39.mp3
How eagerly the people standing around waited for the shepherd to be found out!
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-40.mp3
But how great wastheir astonishment, andeven of the king himself, when the chest wasopened! No gold or silveror jewels but an oldblanket was all that came out.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-41.mp3
Holding it upproudly, the shepherd said, “This, my dear master, is my only treasure. I always carry it with me.”
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-42.mp3
“But why do you carry such an ordinary blanket with you?
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-43.mp3
Surely, you are the governor of a district?” the king asked. To which the shepherd replied with quiet dignity, “Thisblanket is my oldest friend.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-44.mp3
It will still protect me if, at any time, Your Majesty should wish to take away my new clothes.”
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-45.mp3
How pleased the king was, and how embarrassed the jealous governors became to hear the wise man’s reply!
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-46.mp3
Now they knew that the shepherd was indeed the humblest andthe wisest man in the land.
https://www.course.spokenenglish.guru/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Story5-47.mp3
The king made him the governor of a much bigger district that very day.
